Many novice and professional web designers make the same mistake of not having a user friendly design or user friendly features. A little research and a little work can make all the difference in your site designs.
A user friendly design must include a highly visible and usable menu. Unless your website consists of only one page, this is an absolute must. Visitors will wonder who owns or writes the web pages or what the website is all about and be unable to find a link to the about page.
Along with the menu, a home button is a must. Visitors like to reset themselves and navigate their way back through a site. A home link on the website’s logo is nice, but a “Home” link in the menu bar should always be there.
Website in anything but one column, two column or three column should have a very specific reason for not following these tried and true layouts. Users are used to seeing these layouts and going against them will confuse visitors unless you have a purpose for it.
Lastly, garish colors or loud images can really detract from readability of a site and should be avoided. Stick to simple, and users will love you.
